Travel goals and how to achieve them

December 15, 2017

A brand new year is starting soon, so many people are thinking about their 2018 travel goals and how to achieve them. Travel goals don’t differ that much from other goals: they don’t just happen, you have to work for them. Having a goal doesn’t make positive changes happen, focus and small daily rituals do. What you choose to focus on grows stronger in your life. At every moment, thousands of little things compete for your attention. All these things fall into one of two categories: things that are priorities and things that are not. Or: things that get you closer to your goal and things that won’t. That means you have to focus your attention, energy and financial resources wisely. Sometimes you have to say ‘no’ to good things to be able to say ‘yes’ to important things, the things that bring you closer to your goal. Sometimes you will decide not to go out on that expensive dinner with friends, to save money for your dream trip. Choices like that are more easy when you remember that giving things up isn’t just about making small, immediate sacrifices. It’s about gradually gaining the resources you need to do something significant. If you want to achieve a significant goal or outcome in your life, you have to give up the things that conflict with it. You have to sacrifice something that you value less than whatever it is you ultimately want to achieve. It’s all about focus.

For reaching your travelgoals there are some more specific things you can do:

Make a bucket list and choose your focus

Make a bucket list. Choose the destination you dream about most. Research it. What do you want to see? Where do you want to stay? What is the best period to travel there? How much money will you need? How many free time will your trip take? Take your time for your research. You will find some amazing traveltips and being in time with your preparations will save you a lot of money on tickets and accomodations.

Take action

Start working towards traveling to your dream destination means you’ll have to make some sacrifices every now and then. Start working towards achieving this goal by focusing on the small daily actions that will get you there. It can be saving money, saving free days from work, learning a language or a specific skill. The sacrifices along the way will be easier when you have in mind what you are working towards to. Here are some thoughts about this.

Enjoy the journey of getting there

Working towards your next travel goal means you are home and not able to travel for a while. I wrote a blog on this topic, you can read it here. I also have a few tips how to hold on to your travel feeling of your previous trip a bit longer. You can also have fun in advance by preparing your trip, by learning a new language, by doing physical exercises to improve your endurance or learning a new skill like scuba diving.

I hope you will enjoy working towards your next travel goal. Remember: you can’t have a destination without the journey. Seeking a more inspired lifestyle may also help you get there. Maybe you have noticed what happens in your mind when you feed it facebook, gossip and endless bad news. You will feel the difference when you bring your mind into the forest, the ocean or the mountains. Spending time in nature will help you to focus on your goals and make you enjoy the journey of getting there.
